[Interview] Jenn Chong: Bigger room for growth

        With the higher demand for plastics all over the world, the plastics machinery sector is now moving towards improved standards, offering machinery with higher productivity, and providing better after-care services. Price is no longer the sole issue, but more important, quality and productivity. Jenn Chong Plastics Machinery is one of the most competitive plastics extrusion manufacturers in Taiwan. The company recently built a new factory in order to move forward and respond to growing demands from emerging markets. International Plastics News Asia (IRNA) had the opportunity to discuss with the company’s Sales Manager, James Huang, about this newly established factory, its facilities, and the company’s vision in doing so.

        

IRNA: What is the main purpose of building this new factory?

Mr. Huang: During the last six years, we received orders around the globe and honestly the orders were beyond our limited space can handle. We had a 3,000 sq.m. factory but that’s not enough. Because some of our products such as Multilayer Blown Film Extruders JC-CX Series, Monofilament Extruder Line JC-MNP and JC-MNN series and Strapping Band Extruder Lines JC-STP are all big-sized machines that take so much space, and to manufacture these highly complex machines takes time, space became a problem for us as we cope with growing orders.
        In 2009, we decided to build a new factory building combined with the old one, making our factory more complete, and for us to have enough space for production workload. Now the new factory, together with the old one, occupies 7,000 sq.m. This is a very great advantage since now we can keep up with our growing orders easier and fast.

IRNA: What products will be manufactured in the new factory?

Mr. Huang: As I said, by connecting our new factory with the old one, we made it one huge factory. Therefore the enlargement of the factory to handle our growing orders is our main purpose. We have the technology and skills to develop our plastics machinery, but what we lacked before was space for manufacture. Now the newly constructed
space plus the old space allows us to move ahead and increase our production.
        We move dourresearchand development, and machine test run to the new space, leaving the old section for
initial fabrication, welding and machining. We have separated area for assembling of machines. Hence our factory is designed with designated working areas for different stage of production to match the flow of manufacture process. Now, our workers have good and comfortable working environment to do their work and to keep up with the heavy orders. Now we can deal with new orders more efficiently and prompt delivery for our customers.

IRNA: So do you have anything new besides your working space in this factory?

Mr. Huang: Yes, surely we do. INNOVATION. Our R&D department is constantly upgrading the design and technology of our machines to improve their quality and their production capacity. Our designers are working together with technology consultants domestic and abroad, so we can design any machine that meets customer’s
requirements and demand.
        Nowadays, customers are highly technical and their requirements and expectations are higher. Customers from different sectors have varied requirements and requests for technology and design. Our clients are located around the world – from Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa, North America to South America. We must innovate, constantly upgrade our technology and improve our machines to meet customer’s needs. We are up to the challenges for any requirement and demand from our global customers. We can even develop and design machine for customer base on their ideas.

IRNA: How would you assess your Chinabased competitors?

Mr. Huang: Plastic extrusion machinery industry is very competitive. We are not only facing strong competition from China. We also have to compete with European, Western countries, Indian and Turkish manufacturers. China is very aggressive for their price, but we are ahead of them in quality, design and business ethic. However, we have to beware of their competition in the future. We have to worry about transfer of European and Western technology. European and Western manufacturers are lured by the huge market in China. China is acquiring their technology quite fast.
        We must keep ahead in terms of technology and quality. Our R&D is very important to improve and upgrade our machinery to keep us in the race. Our R&D highly skill and qualify engineers are up to the challenge. Despite global economic crisis, we still have a substantial sales growth each year. This means we are recognised and accepted by customers for our equipment and rewarded for our hard work.

IRNA: Besides the blown film extruders and monofilament extrusion line, do you still have other products which are also in advantageous position?

Mr. Huang: We have done extensive development on Strapping Band Extrusion Line within the last few years. We produce high production capacity strapping band extrusion line. We have made up to 12 straps for PP strap extruder line and up to 8 straps for PET strap extruder line. Lower output equipment is not cost effective for the customer. We also incorporated HMI or Human Machine Interface process control for our extrusion lines. HMI process control allows the operator full control of a complicate extrusion line by a touch of finger, and makes the extrusion line more user friendly.

IRNA: So how many people work here now?

Mr. Huang: It was around 20 employees in our factory. Now with the new space and growing order, we have over 30 people working in the factory. It will increase as our orders grow. We have our own designers, technicians, workers, sales, and administrative personnel. It may seem few employees for such size of factory, but they are all experienced and efficient professional employees working closely together to get the job done.
        Many of employees you see here have worked in this industry and with our company for many years. Employees are our precious resources. We really appreciate their loyalty and dedication; we try our best to give them a good comfortable working environment and benefits.
